The Not So Classic Burger and Fries
One of the restaurants that kept reappearing in my restaurant research when I moved here was DMK Burger. DMK has the reputation of being one of the best places to grab a burger in town (first prize always goes to Kuma’s Corner). I put it on my never ending restaurant list. I finally made the trip last year during a weekday for lunch (they don’t take reservations) when my friends from Europe were visiting. I was not disappointed.
Two things I really enjoy about DMK are:
- Secret shakes not on the regular menu. Pumpkin shake with whipped cream and toasted pumpkin seeds? Hell yeah! I don’t care how cold it is outside.
- There is always a special burger of the month
Let’s get to it.
I’ve been to DMK burger during lunch (the place was nearly empty) and on a Wednesday night (surprisingly busy for a cold night). I can’t speak to how it is on the weekend but this recent trip resulted in a quick 10 minute wait. The space isn’t too noisy and is comfortable. I give it a star.
Now this depends, is this your boo or the first date with a potential boo? Most likely you will have to wait. If you think you’ll run out things to talk about before you get to the table, then this place is not for you. I’m just trying to save you from awkwardly standing around for 30 minutes or worse, sitting silently staring at other people who are having great conversation. On the other hand, if you are in no rush and just want to enjoy the evening, then this is the perfect place to grab some burgers and shakes. Ninja star awarded.
I decided to give up drinking till St. Patrick’s day so I was not able to indulge. I was disappointed that they got rid of their toasted marshmallow shake which I had heard so much buzz about. Apparently a strawberry chocolate shake is coming out soon so stay tuned for that. This star is unfortunately not applicable at this time.
The Holy-Guac-Aoili Burger is grass-fed beef topped with chorizo, guacamole, chipotle aioli, onions, and cilantro. The burger definitely had a kick to it.
I love that DMK can take a simple concept like a burger and infuse it with such flavors that it takes the meat to a completely different level. My burger had heat, sweetness, and a cooling effect all at the same time. I can honestly say that I’ve never experienced a burger quite like that before.
As I mentioned above, the table decided to share an order of Parmesan Fries with Truffle Cream and the Mac & Cheese #1 with aged cheddar and parmesan crust.
The fries were amazing but I’m pretty sure you can dip SPAM in truffle cream and people would still like it. But really, the fries were delicious even without the truffle cream.
I wasn’t all that impressed with the mac & cheese. I’m still on my mac & cheese kick and I love when it comes with a nice brown crust. This one had all the potential to be amazing but it simply lacked. It was good but I wouldn’t order it again when I can have fries with truffle cream. Come to think of it, I should have put some truffle cream on the mac…
Ninja star awarded!
DMK Burger comes in at 7/9 ninja stars!
Make your way up North and try DMK or stop next door to The Fish Bar (which I’m dying to try if anyone wants to take me up on it!).
Till next time, peace out food ninjas!
